Overview

**Lidocaine + isopropyl alcohol** is a topical combination of two active agents: lidocaine, an amide-type local anesthetic, and isopropyl alcohol, an antiseptic. Lidocaine works by blocking sodium ion channels in neuronal cell membranes, preventing the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses, thereby producing a local anesthetic effect and reducing pain or itching. Isopropyl alcohol acts as an antiseptic by denaturing proteins, disrupting cell membranes of microorganisms, and helping prevent infection in minor cuts, scrapes, and burns. These combination products are marketed as skin patches or wipes for rapid numbing and skin disinfection prior to procedures or minor injuries. These kits or wipes are not evaluated or approved by the FDA for safety and efficacy and are typically available as over-the-counter products or medical kits[1][9]. Lidocaine is also used in injectable and other topical forms, whereas isopropyl alcohol serves purely a local antiseptic role in the combination.
