Overview

Lidocaine + phenylephrine is a combination topical solution used primarily in nasal and pharyngeal procedures. **Lidocaine**, a local anesthetic of the amide class, blocks sodium channels in nerve membranes to inhibit nerve impulse generation and conduction, producing numbness. **Phenylephrine**, an alpha-1 adrenergic receptor agonist sympathomimetic, induces vasoconstriction to reduce bleeding. The formulation (typically 5% lidocaine HCl and 0.5% phenylephrine HCl) is applied as a spray for preparation of nasal mucosa for surgery or endoscopy, aid in foreign body removal from the nose, and pharyngeal analgesia prior to laryngoscopy.[1][6]
