Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lidocaine HCl Gel 2% (brand name: Glydo) is an approved topical local anesthetic formulation containing 2% lidocaine hydrochloride. It is a small-molecule sodium channel blocker that works by inhibiting voltage-gated sodium channels, thereby preventing ionic fluxes required for the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses and producing local anesthesia. Formulated as a sterile aqueous gel/jelly, it is indicated for the prevention and control of pain in procedures involving the male and female urethra, the topical treatment of painful urethritis, and as an anesthetic lubricant for endotracheal intubation. In clinical trials, such as those conducted by the University of Utah, it has been evaluated for intranasal administration to perform a sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) block to treat post-dural puncture headache (PDPH) following labor epidural placement.
