Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lidocaine liposomal is a specialized drug delivery formulation that encapsulates lidocaine within liposomes to enhance its therapeutic effects and delivery characteristics. This formulation offers several advantages over conventional lidocaine preparations. The liposome encapsulation protects the anesthetic from being metabolized too quickly, providing a more sustained release. It offers advantages including "needle-free" administration, shorter onset of action, and minimal vasoactive properties that reduce interference with procedures like cannulation. Unlike some other topical anesthetics such as lidocaine-prilocaine (EMLA), it is not associated with methemoglobinemia. Lidocaine itself works as a local anesthetic by blocking nerve signals at nerve endings in the skin, causing temporary loss of feeling in the application area.
