Overview

LiRIS (lidocaine-releasing intravesical system) is a medical device designed to deliver continuous, controlled release of lidocaine directly into the bladder over a two-week period. The device consists of a hollow, nonresorbable structure that is inserted into the bladder via the urethra and removed after treatment. Its primary mechanism is local delivery of lidocaine to relieve symptoms associated with interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS), including bladder pain and voiding dysfunction. Developed initially by Taris Biomedical and later acquired by Allergan and Johnson & Johnson, LiRIS was evaluated in multiple phase 2 clinical trials for IC/BPS with or without Hunner lesions but failed to demonstrate significant efficacy compared to placebo.
