LifeGuard is a tissue-engineered vascular patch developed by Cytograft Tissue Engineering for the surgical repair or reinforcement of blood vessels. The device was developed using the company's proprietary Sheet-Based Tissue Engineering (SBTE) technology, also known as the "LifeLine" technology. This approach involves culturing a patient's own cells (typically fibroblasts) to create sheets of robust extracellular matrix, which are then processed into a biological scaffold. Unlike synthetic vascular patches made from materials like PTFE or Dacron, the LifeGuard patch is designed to be entirely biological and biocompatible, aiming to facilitate natural tissue integration and remodeling while minimizing risks of infection, thrombosis, and intimal hyperplasia. It was intended for use in various vascular reconstruction procedures, such as carotid endarterectomy and peripheral vascular repair.
