Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Oilatum is a range of topical emollient products designed for the treatment of dry and sensitive skin conditions, including atopic eczema, contact dermatitis, and ichthyosis. The specific formulation described contains light liquid paraffin (6.0% w/w) and white soft paraffin (15.0% w/w). These mineral oil-based compounds function as occlusive agents, forming a protective layer on the stratum corneum that traps moisture and reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Originally developed by Stiefel Laboratories (later acquired by GSK), the brand was acquired by Thornton & Ross (a subsidiary of STADA Arzneimittel) in 2019. Oilatum has been a standard of care in dermatology for over 50 years and is available in various forms, including creams, bath additives, and cleansers, suitable for use in infants, children, and adults.
