Overview

Ligilactobacillus salivarius LS01 (formerly Lactobacillus salivarius LS01) is a specific probiotic bacterial strain (DSM 22775) developed by Probiotical S.p.A. as a live biotherapeutic product. It is primarily investigated for the treatment of inflammatory conditions, most notably atopic dermatitis in both pediatric and adult populations, as well as pediatric asthma. The strain functions by modulating the host's immune response, specifically by shifting the T-helper cell balance from a Th2-dominant state toward a Th1-dominant state, thereby reducing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as IL-4 and IL-5) and increasing or stabilizing Th1 cytokines (such as IFN-gamma and IL-12). Additionally, it exhibits antimicrobial activity, particularly in reducing the load of pathogenic Staphylococcus species in the intestinal microbiota, which is linked to improvements in skin barrier function and clinical symptoms like the SCORAD index and pruritus.
