Lignosus rhinocerotis polysaccharides (LRP) are bioactive polysaccharides, primarily composed of β-D-glucan, extracted from the sclerotium of the Tiger Milk mushroom (Lignosus rhinocerotis). Traditionally used in Southeast Asia for respiratory ailments, it is now sold as a dietary supplement and is the subject of preclinical research for multiple therapeutic uses. [3, 4] Studies have shown its potential to treat asthma and respiratory disorders by exerting anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and bronchodilatory effects. [4, 8] These effects are partly mediated by the suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines like IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13 and reduction of total IgE. [10, 12] Additionally, its hypoglycemic properties are being investigated for diabetes management, with proposed mechanisms including the attenuation of TGF-β1 and modulation of the PI3K/Akt/GLUT-4 signaling pathway. [1] The substance has also demonstrated antioxidant activities. [1, 5] While it is commercially available as a supplement, its development as a pharmaceutical drug is still in the preclinical or early clinical stages, primarily in academic settings or by specialized biotech companies like LiGNO Biotech. [1, 7]
