Overview
Lignum Aquilariae Resinatum (ALR), commonly known as Agarwood or Chen Xiang, is a traditional Chinese medicine derived from the resinous heartwood of *Aquilaria agallocha* or *Aquilaria sinensis*. It is primarily utilized for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, including stomachaches, emesis, and chemotherapy-induced intestinal mucositis. ALR exerts its therapeutic effects through multiple mechanisms: it acts as a spasmolytic by inhibiting muscarinic receptors, blocking calcium influx, and promoting nitric oxide release. Additionally, it possesses anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and it supports mucosal repair by up-regulating proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). It is typically prepared as an extract and has been studied for its protective effects against 5-fluorouracil-induced intestinal damage.
