Liminal BioSciences GPR40 agonist

Liminal BioSciences is developing a small molecule GPR40 (G protein-coupled receptor 40, also known as free fatty acid receptor 1 or FFAR1) agonist for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes. The program focuses on identifying potent, low molecular weight compounds that enhance glucose-dependent insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells. A primary goal of the program is to ensure liver safety, addressing hepatotoxicity concerns associated with earlier GPR40 agonists like fasiglifam. These candidates are designed to be selective, avoiding significant PPARγ activity, and are intended for oral administration.
