Overview

*Limosilactobacillus fermentum* RC-14 (formerly *Lactobacillus fermentum* RC-14) is a well-documented probiotic strain specifically selected for its ability to colonize the female urogenital tract and maintain a healthy vaginal microbiome. Originally isolated from the urethra of a healthy woman, RC-14 is frequently utilized in combination with *Limosilactobacillus rhamnosus* GR-1 to prevent and treat urogenital infections, including bacterial vaginosis (BV), vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC), and urinary tract infections (UTIs). Its mechanism of action involves the production of biosurfactants that physically inhibit the adhesion of pathogens such as *Gardnerella vaginalis* and *Candida* species to the vaginal epithelium. Additionally, RC-14 produces antimicrobial substances, including hydrogen peroxide and lactic acid, which lower the vaginal pH and create an environment inhospitable to pathogenic overgrowth. The strain was developed by Urex Biotech and is currently produced by Chr. Hansen (now part of Novonesis).
