Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Limosilactobacillus fermentum WIS32 is an investigational live biotherapeutic product, which is a specific strain of the probiotic bacterium *Limosilactobacillus fermentum*. [9] It is being studied as an adjunctive treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD). [2] The proposed mechanism of action involves modulation of the microbiota-gut-brain axis. [2] Preclinical research suggests that `L. fermentum WIS32` can improve depressive-like behaviors by altering the gut microbiota, which in turn increases the levels of serotonin (5-HT) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus, while also inhibiting the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6. [2] The probiotic is being provided for clinical trials by CAS Weizhi (Beijing) BioTech Co., Ltd.
