Overview

Limosilactobacillus salivarius M18-6 is a specific strain of the Gram-positive probiotic bacterium *Limosilactobacillus salivarius* (formerly classified as *Lactobacillus salivarius*). It is primarily investigated for its potential immunomodulatory and therapeutic effects in inflammatory skin conditions, such as atopic dermatitis (AD). Research has evaluated the strain in preclinical models using both oral administration of live cells and topical application of fermented supernatants. The strain is studied for its ability to influence the gut-skin axis and systemic immune responses, including the modulation of inflammatory cytokines like IL-4 and IL-17 and the induction of regulatory T cells (Tregs). However, experimental data indicates that M18-6 may have limited therapeutic efficacy in reducing skin pathology, such as epidermal thickening and mast cell infiltration, compared to other probiotic strains like *Bifidobacterium animalis* J12.
