Overview
Linagliptin is an oral small molecule drug used to lower blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It belongs to the class of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors. Linagliptin works by inhibiting the DPP-4 enzyme, which increases concentrations of incretin hormones such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). These hormones stimulate insulin release from pancreatic beta cells and decrease glucagon secretion from alpha cells in a glucose-dependent manner, resulting in improved regulation of blood glucose levels. Linagliptin is not indicated for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. The drug was developed by Boehringer Ingelheim[1][2][5].
