Overview

LIMA is a fixed-dose combination (FDC) therapy developed by the Brazilian pharmaceutical company EMS for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It consists of linagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor, and dapagliflozin, a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. Linagliptin works by slowing the inactivation of incretin hormones, such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which increases insulin secretion and decreases glucagon levels in a glucose-dependent manner. Dapagliflozin reduces renal glucose reabsorption in the proximal tubule of the kidney, leading to increased urinary glucose excretion and a reduction in blood glucose levels. By combining these two agents with complementary mechanisms of action, LIMA aims to provide superior glycemic control compared to monotherapy. The combination has been evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials (e.g., NCT04121130) comparing its efficacy and safety against the individual components.
