Overview

This is a **combination** of linagliptin (code name BI 1356 BS), a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor, and simvastatin, a 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitor (statin). Linagliptin functions by inhibiting DPP-4, thereby increasing incretin hormones (GLP-1, GIP), which enhances insulin secretion and lowers glucagon levels, ultimately reducing blood glucose. Simvastatin acts by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol synthesis, leading to decreased LDL-cholesterol. The combination may be used in patients who require both glycemic and lipid control, such as those with type 2 diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia. There are no clinically significant pharmacokinetic interactions when administered together, and co-administration is considered safe and well-tolerated[3][5][6].
