Overview

Linalool is a naturally occurring monoterpene alcohol found in over 200 plant species, most notably lavender and coriander. It is widely used as a fragrance component in perfumes, cosmetics, soaps, detergents, shampoos, lotions and other personal care products due to its pleasant floral scent[1][2][3]. Linalool also serves as a flavoring agent in foods and beverages[1][4]. In nature, it plays roles in pollination by attracting pollinators and acts as a defense mechanism against insects and pathogens[4]. Pharmacologically, linalool has demonstrated sedative effects and is used traditionally for anxiety relief. It exhibits anti-inflammatory properties and may help reduce pain. Its anxiolytic effects are believed to improve sleep quality[2][4][5]. The compound exists as two enantiomers (R-linalool and S-linalool), which have slightly different aromas and properties[2].
