Overview
Linex Forte is a synbiotic medicinal product containing two strains of live lyophilized lactic acid bacteria, *Lactobacillus acidophilus* (LA-5) and *Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis* (BB-12), along with prebiotic excipients inulin and oligofructose (Beneo Synergy 1). Developed by Lek Pharmaceuticals d.d. (a subsidiary of Sandoz/Novartis), it is indicated for the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea (including antibiotic-associated diarrhea), flatulence, and bloating caused by disruption of the intestinal microflora. The product works by restoring the balance of the gut microbiome; the bacteria inhibit the growth of pathogenic organisms by lowering intestinal pH, producing antimicrobial metabolites (e.g., lactic acid, acetic acid, hydrogen peroxide), and competing for nutrients and adhesion sites. It has been evaluated in Phase IV clinical trials for the prevention of antibiotic-associated acute diarrhea in adults.
