Overview

Linezolid is a synthetic antibiotic belonging to the oxazolidinone class, primarily used for the treatment of infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria, including multidrug-resistant strains such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE). It acts as a protein synthesis inhibitor by binding to the 23S rRNA of the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby preventing formation of the functional 70S initiation complex essential for bacterial translation. Linezolid is indicated for hospital-acquired pneumonia, community-acquired pneumonia (including cases with bacteremia), complicated skin and soft tissue infections (including diabetic foot infections without osteomyelitis), uncomplicated skin and soft tissue infections, and VRE infections including those with bacteremia[1][2][4][5][6].
