Overview
Linggui Zhulian Decoction (LGZLD) is a modified Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula developed by the Department of Endocrinology at the Affiliated Longhua Hospital of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is specifically designed to treat obesity and insulin resistance. The formula is a modification of the classic Linggui Zhugan Decoction, replacing Glycyrrhiza uralensis with Coptis chinensis to better address the damp-heat and phlegm-dampness patterns often associated with metabolic disorders. LGZLD contains four primary herbal components: Poria cocos, Cinnamomum cassia, Atractylodes macrocephala, and Coptis chinensis. Its mechanism of action involves the modulation of gut microbiota, reduction of systemic inflammation (lowering TNF-alpha and IL-6 levels), and enhancement of insulin signaling via the PI3K/Akt pathway. Clinical and preclinical studies have demonstrated its efficacy in improving body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) in patients with metabolic syndrome.
