Overview

Linopristin is an antibiotic of the streptogramin B class and a chemically modified version similar to quinupristin. It is one of the two synergistic components of the oral antibiotic combination linopristin/flopristin (previously known as NXL103), which acts by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis via the 50S ribosomal subunit. Linopristin is used in combination with flopristin due to its potent activity against Gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and various drug-resistant respiratory pathogens. The combination, developed for the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia and complicated skin and soft tissue infections, has undergone phase II clinical trials, but further development has been discontinued[3][4][7][5].
