Overview

Liothyronine is a synthetic form of the thyroid hormone triiodothyronine (T3). It is indicated as a replacement or supplemental therapy for various etiologies of hypothyroidism, including primary, secondary, and tertiary hypothyroidism. It is also used as an adjunct to surgery and radioiodine therapy in the management of well-differentiated thyroid cancer for pituitary thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) suppression, and as a diagnostic agent in thyroid suppression tests to differentiate suspected mild hyperthyroidism or thyroid gland autonomy. Liothyronine exerts its effects by binding to thyroid hormone receptors, mediating thyroid hormone actions in peripheral tissues. It has a shorter half-life compared to levothyroxine (T4).
