Overview

Liothyronine is a synthetic form of the thyroid hormone triiodothyronine (T3). It is primarily used to treat hypothyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. It also helps decrease the size of an enlarged thyroid gland (goiter) and can be used in the treatment of thyroid cancer. Liothyronine works by binding to specific nuclear receptor sites, influencing gene transcription and protein synthesis, thereby increasing the basal metabolic rate and affecting protein synthesis. It is considered the most potent form of thyroid hormone.
