Overview

Liothyronine sodium + triiodothyronine is a pharmaceutical combination of two forms of the thyroid hormone triiodothyronine (T3): liothyronine sodium (the synthetic sodium salt form) and free or generic triiodothyronine. This combination is used as a replacement therapy for individuals with hypothyroidism or other conditions where endogenous thyroid hormone production is insufficient. Both components act as active thyroid hormones that regulate metabolism, protein synthesis, and cellular energy use throughout the body. The mechanism of action involves direct agonism at nuclear thyroid hormone receptors (TRα and TRβ), leading to modulation of gene expression involved in metabolic processes. This drug may be used in situations where rapid onset or short duration of action is desired compared to levothyroxine (T4), such as myxedema coma or diagnostic testing for thyroid disorders[1][2][7]. Combination therapy with T3 preparations has been explored for patients who do not respond adequately to levothyroxine monotherapy.
