LipaCreon

LipaCreon is a pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) containing pancrelipase, a concentrated mixture of digestive enzymes including lipase, amylase, and protease derived from porcine pancreatic glands. Developed and marketed by Mylan (now Viatris) in Japan in collaboration with Abbott, it is indicated for the treatment of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) caused by cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, pancreatectomy, and other conditions. The drug is formulated as enteric-coated microspheres within a capsule; this design protects the enzymes from degradation by gastric acid in the stomach, allowing them to be released in the alkaline environment of the duodenum. Once active, the enzymes facilitate the breakdown of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, thereby improving nutrient absorption and mitigating symptoms such as steatorrhea and malnutrition in patients with compromised pancreatic function.
