Overview

In the context of the University of Rochester's Phase 2 clinical trial for breast abscesses, a lipid emulsion (specifically Nutrilipid or Intralipid) is utilized as a physical adjunct in methylene blue photodynamic therapy (MB-PDT). Following the drainage of the abscess and the administration of methylene blue, the lipid emulsion is infused into the cavity at a diluted concentration (0.1%). Its primary role is to serve as a light-scattering medium that homogenizes the distribution of 665 nm laser light delivered via an optical fiber. By ensuring a uniform light dose reaches the entire surface of the abscess cavity walls, the emulsion facilitates the effective activation of methylene blue to generate cytotoxic reactive oxygen species, thereby enhancing bacterial disinfection as an adjunct to standard percutaneous drainage.
