Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lipid emulsion + heparin is an experimental combination used in clinical and preclinical research to acutely elevate plasma free fatty acids (FFAs) or non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs). The infusion of a lipid emulsion (such as Intralipid) alongside heparin stimulates lipoprotein lipase, which hydrolyzes the infused triglycerides into free fatty acids. This rapid elevation of circulating FFAs is widely utilized as an in vivo model to induce acute insulin resistance, allowing researchers to study the pathophysiological mechanisms of metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and lipid-induced cardiovascular or endocrine dysfunction.
