Lipid nanoparticle-encapsulated green fluorescent protein messenger RNA (LNP-GFP mRNA) is a widely utilized preclinical research reagent and tool compound. It consists of messenger RNA encoding green fluorescent protein (GFP) or enhanced GFP (eGFP) encapsulated within lipid nanoparticles, typically formulated with an ionizable lipid, DSPC, cholesterol, and a PEG-lipid (e.g., DMG-PEG2000). This agent is used across academic and industrial laboratories to study LNP biodistribution, mRNA delivery efficiency, pharmacokinetics, and cellular transfection. Upon successful delivery and endosomal escape, the mRNA is translated into the GFP protein, which emits bright green fluorescence (emission peak ~509 nm), serving as a reporter to track and quantify mRNA delivery. It has no therapeutic disease indication and is supplied as a research product by multiple vendors, including PrecigenomeLLC and TriLink BioTechnologies.
