Lipidem

Lipidem (marketed as Lipoplus in some regions) is a 20% intravenous lipid emulsion (IVLE) developed by B. Braun Melsungen AG for use in parenteral nutrition. It is a physical mixture of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), long-chain triglycerides (LCT, derived from soybean oil), and fish oil (FO) in a 5:4:1 ratio. Specifically, 1000 ml of the emulsion contains 100 g MCT, 80 g LCT, and 20 g fish oil, providing a balanced supply of energy and essential fatty acids. The inclusion of fish oil provides omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs), such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are intended to modulate inflammatory responses and improve lipid metabolism compared to traditional soybean oil-only emulsions. Lipidem is primarily indicated for patients requiring long-term home parenteral nutrition (HPN), such as those with chronic intestinal failure, to prevent or manage intestinal-failure-associated liver disease (IFALD). It is also utilized in post-operative care for gastrointestinal cancer patients and in neonatal intensive care for preterm infants.
