Lipidots-p24 is an experimental vaccine candidate designed for the prevention or treatment of HIV-1 infection. It utilizes the proprietary Lipidots platform, which consists of sub-100 nm lipid nanoparticles (nanoemulsions) typically composed of a lipid core (such as soybean oil and wax) stabilized by surfactants and phospholipids. In this formulation, the HIV-1 capsid protein p24 is either encapsulated within or adsorbed onto the surface of the nanoparticles. The mechanism of action involves the targeted delivery of the p24 antigen to antigen-presenting cells (APCs), particularly dendritic cells. These nanoparticles enhance the stability of the protein and promote its uptake and subsequent presentation via MHC molecules, thereby stimulating robust cellular and humoral immune responses against HIV-1. Developed by the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), the platform aims to provide a safe and scalable alternative to traditional viral vectors or alum-based adjuvants.
