Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Lipilou** is a brand name for atorvastatin, a synthetic lipid-lowering agent belonging to the statin class of drugs. It competitively and reversibly inhibits **HMG-CoA reductase**, the rate-limiting enzyme in hepatic cholesterol biosynthesis, reducing intracellular cholesterol synthesis, upregulating hepatic LDL receptors to enhance LDL clearance from plasma, and thereby lowering total cholesterol, LDL-C, apo B, triglycerides, and VLDL while modestly increasing HDL-C. Primarily indicated as an adjunct to diet for managing primary hypercholesterolemia, mixed dyslipidemia, hypertriglyceridemia, primary dysbetalipoproteinemia, and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia in adults, as well as heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia in adolescents aged 10-17; it also reduces cardiovascular risk including myocardial infarction, stroke, revascularization, angina, and CHF hospitalization in high-risk patients with or without established CHD. Developed by Pfizer and marketed globally, including in regions using the Lipilou® branding (e.g., 20 mg formulation studied head-to-head against Lipitor).[1][2][4][5][6]
