Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lipiojoint is a novel transient liquid embolic agent developed by Guerbet for use in genicular artery embolization (GAE), a minimally invasive procedure performed by interventional radiologists to treat knee osteoarthritis (KOA). The product is designed to selectively embolize synovial neovessels in the knee that contribute to pain and reduced mobility in KOA patients. By targeting these abnormal blood vessels, Lipiojoint aims to alleviate pain and improve function for patients who have not found relief through non-surgical treatments. Clinical studies, including the first-in-human trial (LipioJoint-1), have demonstrated encouraging results regarding safety and efficacy, with significant improvements in pain and knee function observed at three months post-procedure[1][3][7]. The active formulation consists of an ethiodized oil-based emulsion, typically prepared as a mixture of ioversol and ethiodized oil[7]. In February 2025, the FDA granted Breakthrough Device designation to Lipiojoint due to its potential as an innovative treatment option for KOA[1][4][5].
