Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lipivir is a topical barrier-based gel developed by Devirex AG for the prevention of cold sore (herpes labialis) outbreaks caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). Unlike traditional antiviral treatments that target viral replication after an outbreak has begun, Lipivir acts as a preventive medical device. Its active ingredient is a proprietary mixture of polyethylene glycols (PEGs) that creates a physical barrier on the skin. This barrier is designed to interrupt the signaling between 'scout' virus particles on the skin surface and the dormant virus residing in the nerve ganglia, thereby preventing the reactivation and subsequent outbreak of cold sores. Clinical data indicates high efficacy in reducing the frequency of outbreaks when applied twice daily to the lip line.
