Lipofundin + Lipoplus

Lipofundin and Lipoplus (also marketed as Lipidem) are intravenous lipid emulsions developed by B. Braun Medical SA for use in total parenteral nutrition (TPN) for critically ill patients. Lipofundin is a standard 50:50 mixture of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) and long-chain triglycerides (LCT). Lipoplus is an omega-3 enriched formulation containing a 50:40:10 ratio of MCT, LCT, and fish oil. These emulsions were evaluated in the Phase 4 ICULIP clinical trial to determine if the inclusion of fish oil-derived omega-3 fatty acids could reduce the incidence of nosocomial infections and improve mortality rates in the intensive care unit. The hypothesis is that omega-3 fatty acids modulate the inflammatory response and immune function, potentially offering superior outcomes compared to standard lipid emulsions in patients requiring long-term parenteral nutrition.
