Overview

Lipohydroxy acid is a derivative of salicylic acid (a beta hydroxy acid) used primarily in skincare products for its exfoliating and acne-treating properties. Its unique structure—a long-chain fatty acyl group—makes it more lipophilic than salicylic acid, allowing it to dissolve in oils and penetrate the sebum-rich pilosebaceous unit. This results in slow, controlled penetration and cell-by-cell exfoliation that is gentler on the skin compared to traditional BHAs. Lipohydroxy acid promotes skin renewal by stimulating glycosaminoglycans, collagen, and elastin production; it also has comedolytic (pore-unclogging), anti-inflammatory, antibacterial effects and can reduce hyperpigmentation. It is commonly found in over-the-counter creams, cleansers, toners and spot treatments for acne-prone or aging skin[1][2][5][7].
