Overview

This experimental drug combination is utilized in clinical research to investigate the molecular mechanisms of inflammatory pain and hyperalgesia. It consists of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a Gram-negative bacterial cell wall component used to induce a localized inflammatory response, and azeliragon, an orally bioavailable small molecule antagonist of the Receptor for Advanced Glycation End-products (RAGE). In a human skin inflammation model developed by researcher Stefan Heber, the combination is used to study how RAGE signaling contributes to mechanical hypersensitivity and hyperemia. While azeliragon was originally developed by TransTech Pharma and advanced by vTv Therapeutics and Pfizer for Alzheimer's disease, this specific research application aims to elucidate the role of RAGE and its potential interaction with the TRPV1 ion channel in inflammatory pain pathways.
