Drug intelligence / Profile preview
LipOra peptide refers to an oral formulation of the somatostatin analog octreotide, developed by Universitaetsklinikum Heidelberg using the proprietary LipOra delivery platform. The LipOra technology employs a lipid-based carrier system designed to protect peptides from proteolytic degradation in the stomach and facilitate their transport across the intestinal mucosa, thereby achieving therapeutic systemic levels via oral administration. Octreotide, the active component, functions as a potent agonist of somatostatin receptors, particularly the SSTR2 and SSTR5 subtypes. In patients with acromegaly, activation of these receptors on pituitary somatotroph cells suppresses the hypersecretion of growth hormone (GH), which in turn normalizes levels of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). This oral approach aims to provide a more convenient alternative to the standard-of-care parenteral injections of somatostatin receptor ligands.
