Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Liposomal albendazole is a liposome-entrapped formulation of the broad-spectrum benzimidazole anthelmintic agent albendazole. Developed by the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University, this formulation was designed to overcome the poor aqueous solubility and low oral bioavailability of standard albendazole tablets. By encapsulating albendazole within multilamellar liposomes, the drug's absorption in the gastrointestinal tract is enhanced, leading to higher concentrations of the active metabolite, albendazole sulfoxide, in the liver, plasma, and cyst tissues. Liposomal albendazole is primarily developed for the treatment of echinococcosis (hydatid disease), including cystic echinococcosis and alveolar echinococcosis, where it has demonstrated superior clinical efficacy and a comparable safety profile to standard albendazole tablets.
