Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Liposomal bupivacaine is a long-acting local anesthetic formulated using multivesicular liposomes (DepoFoam technology) to provide extended-release delivery of the active ingredient, bupivacaine. It is indicated for postsurgical analgesia via single-dose infiltration into the surgical site or as a nerve block. The encapsulation in liposomes allows for slow release of bupivacaine over up to 72 hours, providing prolonged pain relief and reducing the need for opioids after surgery. Bupivacaine works by blocking sodium channels on nerve membranes, thereby inhibiting nerve impulse transmission and preventing pain signal propagation[1][3][5][6][8].
