Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Liposomal bupivacaine is an extended-release formulation of the amide-type local anesthetic bupivacaine, utilizing the DepoFoam multivesicular liposome technology. This delivery system allows for the slow, controlled release of bupivacaine over an extended period, typically providing analgesia for up to 72 hours following a single administration. It is primarily indicated for single-dose infiltration in adults to produce postsurgical local analgesia and as an interscalene brachial plexus nerve block for postsurgical regional analgesia. By extending the duration of pain relief, liposomal bupivacaine is often used as part of a multimodal, opioid-sparing analgesic regimen. In clinical studies sponsored by OhioHealth, it has been evaluated for its efficacy in managing postoperative pain following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) compared to standard multimodal analgesic protocols.
