Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Liposomal bupivacaine is an extended-release formulation of the amide-type local anesthetic bupivacaine. It utilizes the DepoFoam delivery system, which consists of multivesicular liposomes that encapsulate the drug and release it slowly over time, providing prolonged analgesia (up to 72 hours) compared to standard bupivacaine HCl. It works by binding to the intracellular portion of voltage-gated sodium channels, blocking sodium influx and preventing the generation and conduction of nerve impulses. It is primarily used for postsurgical local infiltration and regional nerve blocks to manage postoperative pain.
