Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Liposomal curcumin is a specialized formulation of the natural polyphenol curcumin, the primary active constituent of turmeric (*Curcuma longa*), encapsulated within lipid-based vesicles (liposomes). This delivery system is designed to overcome curcumin's inherent limitations, such as poor aqueous solubility, rapid metabolism, and low systemic bioavailability. Developed for clinical evaluation by researchers at the University of Florida, this formulation is being investigated for its potential to mitigate chronic systemic inflammation and oxidative stress in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing hemodialysis. Curcumin exerts its therapeutic effects by modulating multiple signaling pathways, most notably by inhibiting the activation of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and reducing the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-α and IL-6, while also acting as a direct scavenger of reactive oxygen species (ROS).
