Liposomal deferoxamine (L-DFO) is a nanoliposomal formulation of the iron chelator deferoxamine, developed by ZoneOne Pharma to treat transfusional iron overload. By encapsulating deferoxamine within proprietary liposomes, the therapy is designed to target iron deposits in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow, where liposomes naturally sequester. This targeted delivery approach aims to enhance the pharmacokinetic profile and therapeutic index of deferoxamine, potentially reducing the toxicity and the burden of the prolonged infusion schedules required by conventional deferoxamine treatments. It is primarily intended for patients with β-thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, and myelodysplastic syndromes who require chronic blood transfusions.
