Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Liposomal melatonin is a dietary supplement formulation in which the neurohormone melatonin is encapsulated within phospholipid-based liposomes to enhance its oral or mucosal bioavailability and prolong systemic exposure. Melatonin, primarily secreted by the pineal gland, regulates circadian rhythms and sleep–wake cycles and also exerts antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects by scavenging free radicals and modulating antioxidant enzymes and immune responses.[8][2] Liposomal delivery protects melatonin from degradation in the gastrointestinal tract, reduces first‑pass hepatic metabolism, and facilitates more efficient absorption across gastrointestinal or oral mucosa compared with conventional tablets or capsules, aiming to support sleep onset and maintenance with lower effective doses.[2][3][10][12] Commercial liposomal melatonin products are marketed mainly for insomnia, circadian rhythm support, and general sleep quality, often as sprays or liquids containing synthetic melatonin with excipients such as purified phospholipids, glycerin, medium‑chain triglycerides, and ethanol.[1][3][5][7][11]
