Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Liposomal treprostinil is an investigational inhaled formulation of treprostinil in which the active drug is encapsulated in liposomes for slow and controlled pulmonary release. Treprostinil is a chemically stable tricyclic analog of prostacyclin (PGI2), a potent vasodilator and inhibitor of platelet aggregation, indicated primarily for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Liposomal delivery is designed to optimize pulmonary drug exposure, extend release duration, and potentially reduce local and systemic adverse effects compared to standard formulations. Development is focused on the treatment of PAH, specifically for patients in WHO Group I and New York Heart Association Class III. The mechanism of action of treprostinil is direct vasodilation of pulmonary and systemic vascular beds, improvement of cardiac output, and inhibition of platelet aggregation through activation of the prostacyclin receptor and related prostaglandin receptors[7].
