Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bupivacaine liposome is a long-acting local anesthetic formulation consisting of bupivacaine encapsulated in multivesicular liposomes using DepoFoam technology. It is designed for single-dose administration into the surgical site to provide prolonged postsurgical analgesia by slowly releasing bupivacaine over an extended period, typically up to 72 hours. As an amide-type local anesthetic, it works by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels on the neuronal membrane, preventing the generation and conduction of nerve impulses. It was developed by Pacira BioSciences and is widely used for various surgical procedures to reduce the need for systemic opioids.
