Liposome crosslinked hyaluronic acid is a formulation that combines crosslinked hyaluronic acid (HA) with liposomes and often includes crocin as an additional component. This combination is primarily investigated for use in artificial tears to treat dry eye disease (DED). The mechanism of action involves the enhanced viscosity and muco-adhesiveness provided by the crosslinking of HA, which improves ocular hydration and reduces surface friction. Liposomes contribute to forming a lipid layer that helps reduce tear evaporation, while crocin provides antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Studies have shown that this formulation can reduce inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and TNFα, decrease reactive oxygen species production in corneal epithelial cells under stress conditions, and improve clinical measures of dry eye symptoms[1][2][3][6]. The product is being studied for its cytoprotective properties against oxidative stress and inflammation on the ocular surface.
