Overview
Liposyn II is a sterile, nonpyrogenic fat emulsion for intravenous administration, developed by Abbott Laboratories. It is composed of a 1:1 mixture of safflower oil and soybean oil, providing a source of essential fatty acids (linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids) and calories for patients requiring parenteral nutrition. In the context of patients with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP), Liposyn II has been investigated for its clinical effectiveness and its potential impact on immunologic function and HIV viral load. The emulsion is metabolized by the enzyme lipoprotein lipase, releasing free fatty acids that are used for energy or incorporated into cell membranes.
