Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lipovenos is a sterile, pyrogen-free lipid emulsion primarily used for parenteral nutrition, providing energy and essential fatty acids to patients unable to maintain normal oral intake. Its typical composition includes soybean oil, glycerol, and egg phospholipids, with some formulations also containing medium-chain triglycerides. It functions by delivering lipids that are metabolized similarly to physiological chylomicrons, releasing fatty acids and glycerol for energy production and cellular structure. In a research context, a '20% lipid/heparin' formulation of Lipovenos has been used to induce hyperlipidaemia to study its effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.
